Chronic tension & stuck patterns

Chronic muscular tension is the body's memory of everything it once had to hold back. In Core Energetics, tension that doesn't resolve on its own is understood as an embodied defense — a pattern the body learned, usually years ago, to manage feeling or impulse that wasn't safe to express. It doesn't go away by relaxing harder. It goes by being met, understood, and slowly released.

Every defense costs something to maintain. Holding chronic tension in the jaw, shoulders, chest, or belly requires a constant, low-grade expenditure of energy — most of it happening completely outside awareness. This shows up as constricted breathing, fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest, and a persistent sense of being braced against something, even when nothing is currently wrong. Working with this tension isn't about stretching it away. It's slow, careful, and trauma-informed: helping the nervous system feel safe enough to let go of a pattern it built for good reason, at a pace the body can actually integrate.

What releasing chronic tension tends to look like

Breath deepens — breathing softens and drops lower, rather than staying shallow and held in the chest
Energy returns — the fatigue that comes from constant bracing lifts, and vitality becomes available again
Sensation returns — numb or "switched-off" areas of the body start to come back online
Presence increases — you're less braced for what might happen next, more able to be where you actually are
Emotion moves more freely — feelings that were held in the tension have room to surface and pass through
The nervous system settles — baseline anxiety and hypervigilance ease as chronic bracing is no longer needed
"
The tension you're carrying isn't a flaw. It's a record of everything you once had to survive.

Chronic tension doesn't usually announce itself as tension — most people experience it as "just how I am": a tight jaw, a stomach that's always slightly clenched, shoulders that live somewhere up near the ears. Core Energetics reads these patterns as character structure: intelligent adaptations the body made to protect against old hurt, still running long after the original threat is gone.

How old patterns show up

The same holding patterns tend to show up across the body, and across different areas of life.

Bracing

A body that stays subtly tensed, as if perpetually ready for impact.

Shallow breathing

Breath that rarely drops below the chest, keeping feeling at arm's length.

Fatigue without cause

Exhaustion that doesn't track with how much rest you're actually getting.

Disconnection from sensation

Parts of the body that feel numb, distant, or hard to locate.

Hypervigilance

A nervous system that struggles to fully settle, even when things are actually safe.

Somatic complaints

Recurring tension headaches, jaw pain, or back and neck tightness with no clear medical cause.

This work isn't about forcing the body to relax, or pushing through what it's holding. It's about slowly, safely building enough trust for the tension to soften on its own terms — so the energy that's been spent holding on for years becomes available again, as breath, as sensation, as the simple experience of being present in your own body.
